Jason Wuhaha

LaLa Oo Oo Jason Wu Wu

Michelle Obama

Jason Wu is currently the talk of our Global village for designing Michelle Obama's dress for the 10 inauguration balls. The dress was stylistic, elegant and pretty but it was not a classic (feel free to disagree).

I wanted to share his debut collection of 2006 which was bold, androgynous and futuristic. In short, a much better reflection of his talent.

I hope we see a bit more of this from Mr. Wu

OTT, how can i explain it?

her name is Cynthia Okpala, and she's a first time offender.

Nigeria was introduced to Cynthia when she won the MTN MTV VJ search something-or-other years ago, and now she's, well, working the red carpet.

The event was the Future Awards, and the mastermind behind this confusion of fabrics and textures is upcoming designer MAI, who according to this source will be making even more dresses after this one (gasp!!) for none other than recently admired mbgn. Dear Lord!

just so that you fully understand the reason for my (admirably well contained) rage, more pictures:

i want to say i can see the concept, and give props to the designer for thinking and working outside the box, and that i am glad to encourage this infusion of creativity into our society... but no.
word around town is that the dress is loved by many. well, in the words of Danielle Fishelle of the dish, our blog is here to give you all the strength to say no. baby steps lagos, baby steps.

personally, i much prefer the dress on the reporter in the corner:

what say ye?

Celeb spotting.

since two thousand and five, i have wondered what ex-MBGN (Most Beautiful Girl Nigeria) Omowunmi Akinnifesi has been up to. I mean, she doesn't show up on ad campaigns, nollywood doesn't seem to have adopted her and yet, red carpets draw her like a magnet! there was her thing on Nigeria's dancing with the stars a couple of years ago....
anyway the only reason she's made the haute topics is some of those pageant classes seem to have left their style marks on this young celubutanté.
case in point, this long flowing red dress with what looks like pleated detail:

now, while all the local magazines went crazy over it, the pleated look and the black belt i definitely coulda done without. love the train though.

but the dress that actually inspired this post is this one:

designed by one Ohimai Atafo, it is basically just another short tube dress but i confess to loving the gold detail in the fabric, and that let's-see-how-we-can-spice-this-up bow on the side of her boob.
whoever her stylist is did a great job with the layering of her accesories. the cocktail ring works with the entire ensemblé, but i'm not in love with that clutch purse.

all that however, it is a far cry from this yellow-carpet miss:

If I were a boy........... I would wear Dsquared

Dean and Dan Caten = Dsquared2 debuted their Men's collection in 1994 and became relevant to women in 2003 when they decided to create a women's ready to wear line.

Their inspiration tends to be anything from homeless squalor to opulent equestrian Britain. They are also infamous for their super low rise jeans i.e. practically butt crack jeans on both men and women. I find them really mysterious and intriguing - they are identical twins - who is the creative one and who whips up strategy? Or do they both design? Or are they fashions milli vanilli? Bottom line I do not believe they are both designers. Nonetheless, their clothes are edgy, macabre and look great.

Their fall 2009 collection is a mix of formal and casual suits which is nothing new in the world of fashion but there were some effeminate influences such as SEQUINS, shrunken waistcoats and tighter, form fitting trousers. They are:

loving layers...

it's when i see layers worn so fabulously that i start to wish i lived in those places where the sun barely shines...

and even though i could never wear pull off Posh's oh-so-impractical winter look (see how she throws that little fur wrap on jus so we know she acknowledges the weather);

and even though that beanie'd likely maximise my head size about a hundred fold, a girl's allowed to look and long, no?

The Faces of MIU MIU

Rebel without a cause? Or just plain rebel?

The original hollywood wild child

Hellgirl

Indie Cinema Princess

.......erm...Nick Jonas' girlfriend

The new Brigitte Bardot - literally and metaphorically, she will be playing Miss Bardot in a biopic

Oh Lindsay.......you do make good photo

Her Bring it On days are far behind her

Johnny Depp's one and only. *Sigh*

I personally think Miu Miu is overrated but they choose the right celebrities to front their campaigns. Thoughts?

Their next choice is Katie Holmes aka Mrs Tom Cruise, she is certainly pretty but I do not really see her as a face of high fashion but you can be the judge.

But Why

Face it fashion is shallow, materialistic, empty. It cannot change the world, it does not end wars, it does not liberate the psyche.

Edie SedgwickLeigh Lezark of the Misshapes

It is capitalism incarnate and takes wasteful consumerism to its highest echelon. It is a social divider between the haves and have nots.

Siouxsie Sioux

It is a billion-dollar/pound/yen industry that is able to delude us into thinking we need more and more when in reality we do not really need anymore.

Grace Jones

Fashion is even now adding to our already large garbage piles that affect our environment with – THROWAWAY FASHION(which is something I hate to love to hate love…….I haven’t quite decided if I hate it but that is a topic for another day).

Kate Moss

Back to the point.

Fashion is an extravagant indulgence, For some or many it is an addiction, a potent mixture of crystal meth, heroine and cocaine to the 100th power.

Alexa Chung

So why start another fashion blog? Well, because fashion is fun, simple as that. We are not trying to change the world nor are we trying to start a marxist movement or comment on the superficial social hierarchy. we are here to comment, critique, analyze, share our view and love of fashion and all its associated industries.
